Could $100 replace years of travel mistakes
Here’s the exact gear list that does it.
Hey, Johannes from GearUpYourLife here .
Today I’ve got a fun little challenge: how far can you actually get with just $100 worth of travel essentials?
In my $500 full setup video (carry-on, backpack, the whole deal), a lot of you asked:
“Johannes, I already own a bag — can you show us the real must-haves for way less?”
So here we are. I put together a budget-friendly starter pack that covers all the boring-but-critical basics: the things that keep your trips lighter, smoother, and way less stressful.
Here are 7 essentials (well, actually 8 😉) that all together come in under $100 — perfect if you’re just getting started, or if you just want to add a couple of smarter upgrades to your setup.
🧳 Amazon Basics Packing Cubes – $15
Honestly, I don’t know anyone who tries cubes and then goes back.
They keep your bag organized, your shirts flat, and your socks from disappearing into chaos.
And this Amazon Basics set is cheap, durable, and the perfect entry point if you’ve never used cubes before.
🎛️ Bagsmart Tech Pouch – $10
Ten bucks that save you every single time you pack your cables.
Instead of digging through a tangled mess at the bottom of your bag, everything stays neatly in place with loops and pockets.
It’s not fancy, but for the price it’s one of those small upgrades that instantly makes your trips less stressful.
Cotton towels are heavy, stay wet forever, and smell weird after a day.
A microfiber towel? It dries in hours, packs down to nothing, and is always ready for the beach, a hostel shower, or even a quick workout.
For $10, it’s the most practical swap you can make.
💧 Collapsible Water Bottle – $5
Why pay $5 for airport water when you can carry a bottle that folds flat into your pocket?
This thing weighs nothing, opens up when you need it, and saves you money on literally every trip.
It’s the definition of budget-friendly and smart.
🧼 Fomin Hygiene Sheets – $10
Ever walked into a public restroom only to realize there’s no soap?
These little sheets are the fix: add water, and you’ve got rich foam in your hands.
No leaks, TSA-approved, and one pack lasts forever — for me, this is one of those boring gadgets that secretly saves every trip.
🔋 INUI Powerbank – $20
Nothing kills your day faster than a dead phone.
The INUI is budget-friendly, charges fast, and has enough juice to keep your phone alive through flights, maps, and endless photos.
At $20, it’s basically insurance for your trip.
🔌 Compact Power Strip – $15
You know the hotel room with exactly one outlet? Yeah, we’ve all been there.
This little guy gives you multiple sockets + USB ports in one tiny brick.
Perfect for recharging your phone, camera, and earbuds all at once — and for $15, it saves a lot of arguments when traveling with friends.
👜 Amazon Basics Toiletry Bag – $15
Think of this as your backup or overflow bag.
It’s budget, sure, but it’s durable, simple, and just works.
I’ve thrown mine around for years, and it still does its job without falling apart.
So that’s it — my personal pick of the 8 most important budget travel essentials under $100.
These are items that, despite the low price, will last you for years. That I can guarantee.
(Just please don’t leave the soap sheets in your drawer for 2 years and then blame me when they’re dry 😂).
Big announcement: like I already teased last month, I’m making the channel — and all upcoming projects — much more personal.
That means this week will be the last videos with the AI voice you’re used to.
Starting next Thursday, I’ll be recording every video with my own voice (still in English, don’t worry, you don’t have to learn German haha).
And one more thing I’m super excited about: we now have our own Amazon Storefront.
Every gadget I’ve tested and bought on Amazon is neatly organized there — by category, by theme, and by trip style.
So if you ever just want to browse, get inspired, or grab the same gear I use, it’s all in one place now.
Safe travels,
Johannes
PS: Thank you so much for the feedback on Rene’s post — more than 100 of you shared it with friends or family. That honestly means the world 🙏.
