How to Travel for Free !

Your Beginner's Blueprint to Points & Miles

Hey Travel Family šŸ‘‹

Johannes from GearUpYourLife here!

You’ve probably heard the hype: ā€œTravel the world for free using points!ā€ Sounds too good to be true, right? I thought the same—until I booked my first international flight for under €50 using points. This newsletter isn’t just a teaser—it’s your no-fluff, step-by-step guide to understanding how points and miles actually work, and how you can realistically fund your next trip (yes, even that dream trip) using smart strategies, not magic.

šŸŒ What Are Points & Miles, and How Do They Work?

Think of points and miles as a travel currency earned mostly through credit cards and loyalty programs. You get them for spending money you’re already spending—on groceries, dining, bills, gear, and more. Then, you redeem them for flights, hotels, and even full vacation packages.

There are two main types:

  1. Credit Card Points – Like Chase Ultimate Rewards, American Express Membership Rewards.

  2. Airline & Hotel Miles/Points – Earned directly with loyalty programs like Lufthansa Miles & More, or Hilton Honors.

🧠 Step 1: Choose the Right Credit Card (That Fits Your Travel Goals)

You don’t need 10 cards—just 1–2 good ones to start. Here are solid beginner picks (I've personally used these):

  • Chase Sapphire Preferred – Low annual fee (€95), 75,000-point intro bonus = ~$900 in travel. Great all-rounder.

  • Amex Gold Card – High earnings for groceries/dining. Bonus points often worth €600+.

  • Barclays Lufthansa Card (Germany/EU-based) – Great for earning Miles & More points.

šŸ“Œ Tip: Use tools like [CardMatch] or your bank’s pre-check to see what you qualify for.

šŸ’° Step 2: Hit the Welcome Bonus (Without Going Broke)

Most cards require you to spend a certain amount in the first 3 months (e.g., €3,000) to get the bonus. Here’s how to do it safely:

  • Time it with large expenses (insurance, travel bookings, gear, new tech)

  • Pay rent(  Yes Airbnb also Count what make it much easier )through portals that accept credit cards

  • Use it for all daily expenses (groceries, dining, subscriptions)

NEVER spend more than you can pay off. Pay in full every month. This isn’t debt—it’s strategy.

šŸ›« Step 3: Redeem Points for Maximum Value

This is where it gets fun. Let’s say you’ve got 75,000 Chase points:

  • You can book €900+ in flights through the Chase Travel Portal

  • OR you can transfer them to partners like Lufthansa, United, or Hyatt for luxury flights and stays

šŸ”„ Example: I transferred my Chase points to United, then booked a €650 one-way flight to Costa Rica—business class—for just 45,000 points.

šŸ’” When Is It Worth It?

It’s worth it when:

āœ… You’re already spending enough to hit the bonus (no extra debt) āœ… You plan to travel at least once a year āœ… You want to reduce the cost of flights and/or hotel stays significantly āœ… You’re willing to learn the basics (and get big rewards in return)

For long-haul flights, hotels in expensive cities, or last-minute bookings—points are often more valuable than cash.

🧳 Bonus Hacks to Level Up

  • Two-Player Mode: If you have a partner or friend, refer each other for double points

  • Shop Through Portals: Use Rakuten or airline shopping portals to earn extra on regular purchases

  • Combine Loyalty Programs: Use alliances (Star Alliance, OneWorld) to redeem miles across multiple airlines

  • Avoid Point Expiry: Book or earn at least once a year to keep accounts active

šŸš€ Start Here, Today

  1. Check your credit score (Credit Karma or Schufa)

  2. Pick one beginner card that matches your needs

  3. Track your spending to hit the bonus

  4. Join 2–3 loyalty programs (like Lufthansa, British Airways, Hilton)

  5. Explore travel portals to understand point values
