I Bought What You Recommended...
Some turned out genius, some not so much — here’s my honest verdict.”
Hey, Johannes from GearUpYourLife here.
Today’s newsletter is a little different. Since this Sunday’s edition won’t be a community story, I figured we’d make Wednesday all about you. Over the past month, you dropped a ton of gadget recommendations in the comments — so I bought them, tested them, and yes… my wallet wasn’t thrilled but my curiosity definitely was.
Some of them were complete surprises, some turned into serious upgrades, and one or two honestly made me feel like my mom was right all along: maybe packing more isn’t always such a bad idea. Either way — here’s what happened when I put your gadgets to the test.
1. (9/10) Anker Nano (Theresa Forino)
Theresa actually suggested this as an alternative to the Epicka Universal Travel Adapter — which is a bold comparison. The Anker Nano is around $40, and as a charger it’s fantastic: tiny, powerful, and charges like crazy. I’d give it a straight 9/10. But compared to Epicka as a full-on adapter alternative, more like a 7.5/10 — simply because Epicka covers way more functions. Still, the Nano earned its spot. From now on, it’s always coming with me.
👉 Verdict: Excellent charger, not a one-to-one adapter replacement.
2. (8/10) Quick Flip Hoodie (914Rocky.)
Rocky, I hope I bought the right one 😂 The whole hoodie-to-pillow idea sounded like a gimmick, but for $30–40 it’s surprisingly good. As a hoodie? Super comfy. As a pillow? Decent. Not quite business class comfort, but hey, better than nothing. Only downside: it’s a bit bulky.
👉 Verdict: Cool gadget, more fun than expected.
3. (7.8/10) Blukar LED Torch (Micheal Freeze.)
Michael, I gotta be honest — when I read “LED Torch,” I had a moment of panic. My English brain went, “Wait, Should i order a medieval fire torch?” 😅 Luckily it’s just a $12 flashlight, and a solid one at that. Super light, bright beam, and feels well-built. For hiking or camping, awesome. For everyday travel, maybe less essential.
👉 Verdict: Great budget light, but not always in my pack.
4. (7.5/10) Foldable Foot Hammock (Renee Hill)
Renee, you actually made me reconsider my stance here. I had tried a non-foldable version before and hated how bulky it was. This foldable one is definitely 1–2 points better. Comfort-wise? Solid. But since I haven’t flown long-haul again since testing, I stick with my opinion: foot hammocks are a really nice to have — but they don’t quite hit the “essential” level for me.
👉 Verdict: More comfortable than expected, still optional.
5. (9.5/10) Aeropress (Aleks)
Aleks, no surprise here — this one’s a classic. Around $35, makes coffee that actually tastes like coffee, and way better than hotel machines or instant. A little messy, yes, but worth every sip.
👉 Verdict: If you love coffee, don’t travel without it.
6. (8/10) DeWalt Charging Cable (Hanuta Matata)
Hanuta, I actually smiled when I unpacked this one. It just feels tough. Like, construction-site tough. Price was around $20, which felt steep for “just a cable,” but after using it… yeah, it’s solid. I’ve even recommended it before in a video, and you can tell why: it doesn’t quit on you like cheap cables do.
👉 Verdict: Not fancy, not slim, but it gets the job done — every time.
Bonus: (8.2/10) ESR Geo Wallet Stand
Okay, this one’s… kind of weird at first glance, but the more I used it, the more I realized how versatile it actually is. It’s a wallet, it’s a phone stand, and it doubles as an AirTag tracker — all in one. And the battery? You only need to recharge it once every three months. That’s almost genius.
Normally it’s around $50, which is on the pricier side. But since we’ve got the ESR community deal (code Johannes25Ani = 25% off all their products), it becomes much more tempting.
👉 Verdict: 8.2/10 — only because every single function can technically be solved with separate gear. But if you like the all-in-one idea, this thing is genuinely worth a try.
It’s always super interesting to see which gadgets you recommend and to actually buy them myself — because sometimes you prefer completely different things than I would, or you’ve had experiences I never had. That’s what makes this community so valuable.
From now on, I’ve added all your community favorites into a dedicated list on my Amazon Storefront. I’ll keep updating it every time a new gadget comes in from you guys, so we’re building this list together.
Safe travels,
Johannes ✈️
PS: I’m really sorry I haven’t been able to reply to your emails and comments over the past few days. I’ve been completely knocked out with a fever (over 38°C) since the weekend and mostly just sleeping. I’ll try to catch up tonight — at least on the comments under the new video, the community post, and your questions.
