LOST in the clouds in Portugal – it was perfect
Hey — Johannes from GearUpYourLife here 👋
Before we get into today’s story:
This one’s not about packing cubes, gadgets, or airports.
It’s about getting lost — and somehow finding the most magical place I’ve seen in years.
A few weeks ago, at the end of our 3-month Spain/Portugal trip, we landed in Lisbon for the second time.
It was 41°C. We had already seen the sights. And we just wanted one thing: a beach.
I had one saved: Cascais — supposed to be amazing.
But when we got there, it was chaos.
Every grain of sand was taken. Umbrellas stacked. People shoulder to shoulder.
We stood there for 10 minutes in the heat and just thought: nope.
So we left. No plan. Just opened Google Maps, zoomed way out, and picked a random beach 30 minutes away at the very western tip of Portugal.
It looked like nothing. No reviews. No photos. Just a name.
We drove there anyway.
And when we arrived, we couldn’t see a thing. Thick fog. A giant cliff. No sound but wind.
I honestly thought we were lost — and we almost turned back.
Then, out of nowhere, a group of Portuguese hikers asked us if we knew the way to the beach.
We laughed. “No idea. We’re just guessing.”
So we guessed together.
We climbed. We slipped. We walked through silence.
And then — between the clouds — we saw it.
Down below:
A hidden cove.
Maybe 10 people.
Massive waves crashing.
Towering cliffs on all sides.
And fog hanging just above the water like a floating ceiling.
It was like walking into another world.
I stood there, barefoot, salty air in my face, thinking:
I almost missed this.
And that stuck with me.
Because it wasn’t just about a beach. Or a lucky turn on Google Maps.
It was about how easily we give up when things don’t go as planned.
How we rush to fix the day instead of letting it unfold.
We almost went back that morning.
We almost settled for the expected.
But by walking blindly into the fog, following strangers, and not knowing if there was anything waiting for us —
we found something unforgettable.
So here’s what I learned, again:
The most beautiful moments don’t always show up on the itinerary.
Sometimes they’re hidden behind disappointment, fog, and a brutal 45-minute hike.
Sometimes, you have to get completely lost to feel found.
And honestly —
I really want you to see what I’m talking about.
I uploaded a few photos from that exact day on Tuesday — they’re over on my Instagram @gearupyourlife.
The waves. The clouds. That wild, empty beach.
It still doesn’t feel real.
So yeah — this wasn’t really a story about a beach.
It was about what happens when you keep going anyway.
See you next Wednesday,
– Johannes
