My 5 Scariest Travel Experiences – Ranked

✈️ The side of travel I never post about...

Hey, Johannes from GearUpYourLife here –

You probably know me as the guy who reviews packing cubes, runs through airports with a camera, and tests way too many gadgets. But travel isn’t always pretty sunsets and delicious street food.

Sometimes… it’s straight-up terrifying.

So, since it’s Sunday and I like to get a little personal with you guys, I decided to rank my Top 5 scariest travel moments. These are stories I’ve never really shared in full before. Some are funny in hindsight. Others? Still kinda haunt me.

Let’s get into it:

#5 – The Airbnb Invasion (Bogotá, Colombia)
I was exhausted. Long travel day, finally in bed, just dozing off.
Then – click. The sound of a key turning.
I froze. The door opened.
In walked… my Airbnb host. At 2 in the morning.

Apparently, he thought the apartment was still empty. His wife had just kicked him out, and this was his backup plan. He was apologetic, a little drunk, and honestly seemed just as surprised to see me.

But imagine being half-asleep in a foreign country, thinking someone is breaking in. I didn’t sleep the rest of the night. And yes – I always put a chair in front of the door now.

#4 – The “Friendly” Robbery (Southern Italy)
I was walking through a small town in southern Italy, camera in hand, good vibes only.
Two men approached me, smiling, asking questions.
Where I was from, what I was filming – casual stuff.

But as they talked, they got closer. A little too close. One bumped into me playfully, like an old friend.
And just like that, my wallet was gone.

I didn’t even realize it until they waved goodbye and walked off.
Smooth. No yelling. No threats. Just… gone.
To this day, I have no idea how they pulled it off so fast.
Lesson learned: never underestimate pickpocket ninjas in polo shirts.

#3 – Scooter From Hell (Koh Samui, Thailand)
Ah yes, Thailand. Land of coconuts, clear waters… and scooters that want to kill you.
I was riding down a steep mountain road on Koh Samui, wind in my hair, life was good — until my brakes stopped working. Completely.

I squeezed both handles — nothing.
I looked down: no fluid. No resistance.
Just gravity and me.

There was no way to stop. I had to ride it out, leaning into curves, dodging potholes, praying no car was coming uphill.
It felt like an action movie with no budget.

When I finally coasted to a stop at the bottom, I was shaking.
It took me 20 minutes to unclench my hands from the handlebars.
Never again.

#2 – Police Trouble in Kyrgyzstan
Okay, imagine this:
I’m in a quiet little town in Kyrgyzstan — no tourists, no backpacker cafes, just old Soviet buildings and curious stares. My girlfriend’s family is originally from here, but I’m on my own this time.

I’m wandering around with my camera, trying to get some street shots — old Ladas, dusty windows, kids playing in alleys. Then I notice a local policeman walking straight toward me.

He says something in Russian — fast, firm. I catch one word: “Passport.”
I try to explain that it’s at my hotel.
He frowns. Points down the street. Gestures: “Come with me.”

A few minutes later, I’m sitting inside a small police station. One desk, one flickering light. Nobody speaks English. No one explains what’s going on.

They leave me sitting there for over an hour. No phone. No translation. Just me and the ticking clock.

Finally, the officer comes back, holding a handwritten piece of paper. No stamp. No header. Just numbers:
100 Euro
110 US Dollar
10,000 Kyrgyz Soms

That was it. No explanation. Just a silent expectation.
I look at him, confused.
He looks at me like I already know.

So… I pay. In Soms. Right there, no receipt.

And only then, he leans in and says — in perfect, fluent English:

"Okay. I’ve now seen your passport."

And that’s when I realized: he understood everything the whole time.
Welcome to real travel.

#1 – Guns at the Border (Venezuela)
We were entering Venezuela with a local guide. Things were tense but under control — until three men with weapons stepped out of nowhere.

They surrounded us. No words, just stares.
My heart sank. I had no idea what they wanted or who they were.

Our guide stepped forward and started speaking quickly in Spanish.
There was tension in the air — thick, heavy.
I looked around. No police. No cameras. Just jungle.

Eventually, the men backed off and disappeared into the trees.
Later, the guide told us it was just an “intimidation tactic.”
A way of showing who’s in control.
But honestly? That was the first time I truly thought, “We might not make it out of here.”

Travel isn’t always picture-perfect Instagram sunsets.
Sometimes, it’s messy, scary, and totally unpredictable.

But those are the stories that make you sharper, stronger — and yeah, maybe a little crazier too.

Take care out there,
