One Suitcase, One Dream – and Five Thoughts That Keep Me Up at Night
This Week Feels Different – Here’s Why
Hey, it's Johannes from GearUpYourLife.
Travel has always been the thing that gives my life meaning. And yet, right now — just a few weeks before my flight back to Vietnam — it feels like it did the very first time.
Maybe because, in many ways... it is the first time again.
I'm going all in.
On this lifestyle. On this channel. On myself.
And like every big new chapter, it comes with a mix of excitement, doubt, motivation — and some really honest thoughts I want to share with you today.
1. Excitement mixed with uncertainty
I’m heading back to the place where it all began two years ago: Vietnam.
One of my absolute favorite places in the world — but also the place where I felt the most alone and, weirdly, the most hopeful.
Back then, I had just quit everything to travel full-time for a year.
And after only a month, I already missed the safety of home.
The unknown — the question of “What the hell am I doing?” — started creeping in.
All my friends were building something "real", and I... was trying to figure out who I even was with a backpack and a dream.
2. The fear of losing myself (again)
During those first months in Vietnam, I started to slowly withdraw.
Ordering food instead of going out, isolating myself, avoiding people — and sometimes even feeling weird about stepping outside.
That version of me... I don’t want to meet him again.
Today, I feel way stronger and much more grounded.
But still — this move to Asia marks another new beginning.
And like last time, it forces me to ask:
Who do I want to be this time?
3. The pressure to always have the “perfect” content
When I first started on YouTube, all I wanted was to share a few travel products.
I didn’t even use my real voice in the videos because my German accent made me shy.
My only goal was to get better at editing and help people with the only thing I felt confident about: travel gear.
Now we’re almost 2,000 people on YouTube, and around 500 are probably reading this email right now (thank you for that!).
But I know it’s time to address the elephant in the room.
If I want to take GearUpYourLife to the next level, I need to stop hiding behind b-roll and voiceovers.
I want to start showing myself testing the Gadgets. Using my voice. Telling the stories in person!
Because that’s what GearUpYourLife is really about.
(Okay… and also packing lists.)
4. The loneliness behind the camera
This one’s a bit harder to talk about.
Because yes — I’m living the dream.
But dreams don’t protect you from the quiet nights, the overthinking, or the homesick moments when you're far from everyone you love.
Behind every 12-minute YouTube video is hours of planning, doubt, self-talk, and editing until 2am.
And sometimes, it just gets lonely.
But...
5. Hope and motivation for the future
...Despite everything, there’s a fire inside me.
The belief that this path is worth it.
That the community we’re building, the stories we share, the freedom we live — it matters.
I believe that this channel, this newsletter, this weird travel life of mine — can actually inspire people to go live their best life.
That’s what keeps me going.
Even on the hard days.
🚨 Big News from Me:
Next Sunday, it’s not just my story anymore – it’s yours too.
Every week, I get messages from people sharing powerful, personal travel moments.
Some of them inspire me more than I can put into words.
So I thought:
What if everyone could hear these stories?
That’s why I’m launching something new:
🗓️ Every second Sunday, one of your stories will be featured in this newsletter.
We’re calling it:
“Sunday Spotlight” – Real Stories from Real Travelers.
Whether it’s your first solo trip, a bold decision to change your life, or just a simple, unforgettable moment —
your story matters.
Just hit "reply" and tell me your story.
Don’t worry about being a perfect writer — I’ll help shape it.
The first story goes live next Sunday. Maybe it’s yours 🌍
Let’s show the world what travel really feels like.
– Johannes
