Packing for Europe this summer? Start here 🇪🇺.

Packing for Europe? Here’s what you actually need (no fluff, just facts)

Hey, Johannes from GearUpYourLife here !
Packing for Europe sounds simple... until you realize it means unpredictable weather, strict carry-on limits, and that half the continent uses a different plug than your charger.
So today, I’m giving you my real-world, fully-tested Europe Summer Packing Guide.
No paid promos, no influencer fluff – just gear that’s made it through train rides, hostel kitchens, and last-minute Ryanair gate checks.
Let’s pack smarter. Your trip deserves it. 🇪🇺✈️

Packing for Europe is all about keeping it light, smart, and ready for the unexpected — because trust me, the weather, the terrain, and even the fashion standards can change drastically from country to country. Your best bet? Build a compact wardrobe that’s flexible enough to handle heatwaves in Rome and rainy nights in Amsterdam.

I usually go with about three Merino wool t-shirts — they’re odor-resistant, quick-drying, and practically bulletproof when it comes to daily wear. Add one lightweight rain jacket that packs down small (and saves you from buying a tourist poncho for €12), and you’re already ahead. A couple of button-ups are great for dinners or nights out, and one good bathing suit is non-negotiable if you're planning to jump into a lake or stumble upon one of those wild Croatian beaches.

For bottoms, two pairs of shorts and one pair of light, breathable pants should cover most scenarios. And don’t forget a simple jacket — something like a denim or a neutral blazer. It keeps you warm and pulls together almost any outfit. As for shoes, one solid pair of everyday sneakers and something slightly nicer (loafers or desert boots, maybe) are usually more than enough. You really don’t need a different pair for every occasion — just pick pieces you can mix and match.

Toiletries are another trap for overpackers. Stick to mini versions of your regular skincare and opt for solid shampoo bars or toothpaste tablets to get through airport security without stress. European airports can be stricter than the TSA when it comes to liquids — I’ve seen full-sized sunscreen bottles chucked into the bin more than once. All in all, your whole toiletry setup should fit into a small pouch, including toothbrush, deodorant, and sunscreen.

When it comes to health essentials, it’s pretty straightforward: your meds go in your carry-on — never checked. I always bring a small first-aid kit (just the basics), a microfiber towel, and earplugs. Trust me, city centers get noisy, and you’ll thank yourself when you're trying to sleep through a Saturday night in Barcelona.

Your documents should be easy to access but safe. Passport, of course, plus digital backups stored on your phone. I also bring a credit card with no foreign transaction fees and a debit card for cash withdrawals. Travel insurance printout? Yes, boring, but better than hunting through your inbox in a French emergency room.

Now, let’s talk electronics — the true unsung heroes of smooth travel. My holy grail is the EPICKA universal travel adapter. Without it, your gadgets are basically bricks. Pair that with a 3-in-1 magnetic charging cable (it charges everything: USB-C, Lightning, Micro-USB) and a small portable fan for hot southern summers, and you’re good. I also travel with a compact travel iron, two AirTags (because losing your bag in transit is the worst), and a pair of noise-canceling headphones for flights and loud hostels. If you’re a reader, an amber reading light or Kindle is a game-changer. All of it gets neatly packed in a Peak Design Tech Pouch — which, I swear, is like Tetris for your chargers and cables.

One last essential? A reusable water bottle. Not only does it save you from buying overpriced bottles at tourist traps, but cities like Rome, Paris, and even small villages have free refill stations. You save plastic, money, and time — win-win-win.

Let’s talk bags. I always bring a collapsible duffle in my luggage — especially helpful when your Ryanair flight back home has that brutal 8kg carry-on limit. You can fill it with shopping or overflow items and check it if needed. For my main luggage, I use the MONOS Carry-On( GIVE AWAY SUNDAY ). After five years and countless European streets, the wheels are still smooth, and the hard shell has held up like a champ.

And if you’re more into backpacks (like many digital nomads or one-bag travelers), go for something between 35 and 45 liters, lightweight, and without a ton of random pockets. Some of my favorite options are the Peak Design Travel Backpack, the Tortuga Lite, the Osprey Farpoint, and the Tom Bihn Techonaut. These are built to last and actually fit under most airline carry-on limits.

Before you go, here’s my golden advice: check the weather a few days before your trip. Sounds obvious, I know, but European weather changes fast, and you don’t want to be the person who only packed shorts for Berlin in May. And whatever shoes you bring — break them in first. Comfort beats style when you're walking 20,000 steps through cobblestone streets. And honestly, no one wants to spend their Rome trip limping between gelato stops.

A Quick Story Before We Wrap Up...

Last summer in Lisbon, I made a classic rookie mistake.
No packable rain jacket. No umbrella.
Then came the storm — sideways rain, flooded sidewalks, and me, soaked through in 30 seconds like a poorly dressed tourist meme.
Learn from me. Pack smart. Stay dry.
