The Secret to Keeping Routines Alive While Traveling

Why small steps, clever systems, and a little honesty beat motivation every time.

The alarm rings. It's 5:59 AM.

Outside it's quiet. The world is still sleeping. But I'm not.

I peel myself out of bed, stumble to the bathroom, splash cold water on my face and wonder... why does this feel so hard?

Back home, this was just my normal routine. But after one week here in Valencia, Spain, I look in the mirror and think:

Why am I doing this?

I could just sleep in. Wake up whenever. I’m traveling full-time now—who would care?

But still, I lace up my Hoka Clifton 10s and go for a run.

This post isn't about running. Or waking up early. It's about something way more important:

Routines.

And why they might be the most powerful tool you can build—especially while traveling long-term.

Let’s get this out of the way:

You’ve seen those gurus online preaching 4:30 AM wake-ups and 5-hour morning power blocks packed with journaling, meditation, breathwork, HIIT, and three cold showers before 9 AM.

Here’s my take:

That’s nonsense.

It doesn't matter when you wake up. What matters is that your routine actually works for you.

When I first started traveling full-time two years ago, I struggled. At home, I used to wake up at 6 AM, jog, be at work by 8:30.

But now, that job was gone. I was my own boss. I told myself I’d still keep the same routine—but now I'd finish work at 3:30 PM and "enjoy the freedom."

Instead, I got lazy. Unmotivated. Tasks piled up. I didn’t want to work or even wake up.

And then it hit me:

It wasn’t what I was doing that felt wrong. It was how I got there.

Here’s the deal:

A good routine isn’t about discipline. It’s about designing a system that fits the life you actually live.

Mine now looks like this:

  • Wake up at 7:30

  • 15–30 min walk, stretch, cold water splash

  • 30 min reading

  • 2 hours of focused work

  • A long break to explore my new surroundings

  • More work, only when it makes sense

So how do you build a system like that? One that actually sticks—even when you're on the road?

Let me give you 5 real tips that work:

💡 1. Start smaller than you think

Why it works: Your brain hates big, vague goals. It sees them as threats.

Instead, shrink the habit so much that your brain says: "Oh yeah, that’s easy."

Examples:

  • Instead of "Write 500 words a day" → "Write 1 sentence"

  • Instead of "Workout 45 minutes" → "Do 1 exercise"

Small = doable = repeatable. And that's what makes it stick.

Why it works: Habits don’t live in a vacuum—they need a cue.

Examples:

  • After brushing teeth → Journal

  • After your morning coffee → Read for 10 minutes

  • After jogging → Stretch

The more consistent your trigger, the more automatic your habit becomes.

🛠️ 3. Use the "Don’t Break the Chain" method

Why it works: Visual progress is addicting. It builds momentum and makes skipping a day feel like losing something valuable.

How to do it:

  • Every time you complete your habit, mark an X on a calendar or app.

  • Tools like Habitify, Streaks, or even a printed calendar work great.

⏱️ 4. Focus on time, not results

Why it works: Goals like "Edit one video" are too vague. But "Work on editing for 60 minutes" is measurable.

It builds consistency—not perfection.

Examples:

  • Don’t say: "I’ll finish this today."

  • Do say: "I’ll work on this for 50 minutes."

Set a timer. Then rest. That’s it.

🎯 5. Make it attractive & easy

Why it works: The easier and more enjoyable your system, the more often you’ll show up.

Tactics:

  • Lay out your workout clothes the night before

  • Set up your journal or work app to open with one click

  • Pair hard habits with things you enjoy (music, coffee, views)

Routines aren’t punishments—they’re tools for clarity and freedom.

Final Thought:

You don’t need iron discipline. You need a smart system.

One that fits your life.

So build slowly. Stay flexible. Focus on your environment, your triggers, and your own rhythm.

If you take one thing from this email, let it be this:

"Consistency beats intensity. Every. Single. Time."
