What I’d pack if I had 10 minutes, one bag, and no second chances.
My 10-item travel capsule – no fluff, no regrets.
Hey, Johannes from GearUpYourLife here –
I once flew 12 hours, landed in Cairo, and realized I packed three kinds of shampoo but forgot socks. Let that sink in.
Since then, I’ve made it my mission to pack smarter – not more.
So today, I’m giving you something kinda special:
My personal Travel Capsule Setup – 10 things I actually bring on every trip. No fluff, no "just in case" nonsense. Just stuff that works.
Whether it’s a day in Rome, a night bus in Vietnam, or trying to make instant coffee in a hostel with a hairdryer (don’t ask) — these ten items have survived it all.
And tomorrow, well… something much bigger drops.
Right here in this inbox. A launch, a freebie, and a limited offer on something I’ve spent way too much time obsessing over —
where this capsule list is only 1% of the full system.
Let’s dive in 👇
1. Sleep Mask
You can’t control your seat neighbor or the hostel lights – but you can blackout the world on demand. A good mask makes all the difference on red-eyes, overnight buses, or early sunrises.
My go-to: Manta Sleep Mask – 3D molded, no pressure on the eyes, and total blackout.
2. Tech Pouch
Cables, SIM tools, chargers, adapters – without a pouch, they live at the bottom of your bag… multiplying. A good tech pouch keeps you organized, fast, and not the person digging through their bag at security.
My go-to: Peak Design Tech Kit - everything visible at a glance, zipped and done.
3. Compact Power Bank (Anker MagGo)
Travel rule #1: If your phone dies, you're suddenly lost, hungry, and alone in a new city. This one charges fast, fits in a pocket, and works wirelessly or with a cable. You’ll thank yourself during layovers, when your Airbnb lock is digital, or your Uber driver can’t find you.
My go-to: Anker MagGo – magnetic, TSA-approved, and powerful enough to save the day.
4. Sling Bag (Nayosmart HL1)
I used to travel with just a backpack. Big mistake. The sling bag changed everything – for city strolls, airport navigation, and any day trip where stuffing my pockets wasn’t cutting it. I throw in my passport, earbuds, gum, wallet, and snack bar. It’s on me 80% of the time and saves me 100 little annoyances.
My go-to: Nayosmart HL1 – clean look, loads of compartments, and the hidden back pocket is clutch.
5. Reusable Leakproof Silicone Bottles
Hotel shampoo is a myth. Travel-size ones leak. These silicone ones? Game-changer. They’re TSA-friendly, soft-squeeze, and actually don’t leak in your toiletry bag.
My go-to: Matador FlatPak or GoToob+ – simple, washable, and survive even when crushed.
6. Noise-Cancelling Headphones
The difference between arriving drained or zen. Planes, trains, screaming babies, café grinders, or snoring dorm mates – block it out. You don’t need to hear the world 24/7. I use them to create a little sound bubble where I can listen to podcasts, nap, or pretend I’m in a music video while waiting for my flight.
My go-to: Sony WH-1000XM5 – light, comfy, and magical in loud places.
7. Merino Wool T-Shirt & Socks
Merino is the cheat code. Breathable in heat, warm in cold, and odor-resistant enough to wear for days. It dries fast and stays fresh. It’s what I wear on flights, hikes, and late checkout days.
My go-to: Unbound Merino – not cheap, but worth every wash it saves.
8. Microfiber Travel Towel
Whether you're in a hostel, hiking to a hidden waterfall, or staying in that Airbnb with no towels, a quick-dry microfiber towel is a lifesaver. Packs tiny, dries fast, and works like a charm after impromptu swims.
My go-to: 4 monster– large but packable, super absorbent.
9. Reusable Silicone Pouches
Snacks. Chargers. Docs. I use them as bag dividers – one for tech, one for food, one for cables. Transparent, flexible, and leak-resistant, they’re way more useful than ziplocks or hard cases.
My go-to: Stasher Bags – durable, eco-friendly, and versatile.
10. Compact Power Strip with USB Ports
Airports have 1 outlet. Hotels hide theirs. And you’ve got 3 devices. This strip lets you charge everything at once and makes you instantly popular in shared spaces.
My go-to: Anker PowerPort Strip PD 2 Mini – 2 AC, 2 USB, 1 USB-C. Fits in your hand.
And just a heads-up…
📬 Tomorrow night, I’m sending out a special edition of this newsletter with something exclusive:
You’ll get access to the Packing Guides Lite – a simplified version of the full bundle – plus an early discount code for the project I’ve been working on for nearly three months now.
It all goes live Friday evening, just in time for the new video – and trust me, it’s gonna be good.
Sending warm greetings from my first real road trip with a car (and yes, the playlist is fire).
Talk tomorrow – and on Sunday, we’ll dive into this very road trip… including the first ever travel story from one of you.
Stay tuned.
– Johannes
