What I realized after one year of chasing the world!
A personal story about confidence, community, and finding your voice
Hey,
Johannes from GearUpYourLife here —
This week, I want to share something a little different. No gadgets, no giveaways. Just one story from the road that changed how I see myself — and maybe, it’ll resonate with you too.
Two years ago, I was just a in my early Twenties and guy from a small German town with a backpack full of doubts. I didn’t have a YouTube channel. I didn’t know how to talk to a stranger. Honestly, I didn’t even know who I was. I just knew I wanted to go somewhere — anywhere that felt bigger than the world I came from.
So I booked a one-way flight.
Not because I was brave. But because I was afraid of staying stuck.
In the beginning, I thought traveling would “fix” me. Like somehow, standing on the other side of the world would also mean standing on the other side of my insecurity. I imagined that climbing a volcano or eating street food in Bangkok would magically make me confident.
Spoiler: it didn’t.
Instead, I found myself more lost than ever — in new countries, surrounded by strangers, still wondering who the hell I was and why I couldn’t just feel like I belonged somewhere. I kept waiting for that big aha moment to show up. But it didn’t come in one night. It came slowly, in pieces.
In a tiny hotel dorm where a stranger asked how I was — and actually meant it.
In a night train conversation with someone who’d been through the same.
In small cafés, early sunrises, missed flights, and moments when I let my guard down — and someone else said, “Same here.”
What I didn’t realize then was this:
The reason I never felt enough had nothing to do with who I was — it had everything to do with who I thought I had to be.
And the cure wasn’t becoming louder, stronger, or more “successful.”
It was finding people — or even just moments — where I didn’t need to perform at all.
Where I could just be. Quiet. Confused. Curious. Me.
That’s what travel gave me. Not answers — but space.
Space to unlearn the idea that I needed to earn my worth.
Space to connect. To breathe.
To realize that confidence is not a personality trait. It’s a muscle. One you train by stepping out — just a little — and letting people see the real you.
And sometimes… they surprise you.
Sometimes, they say: “I see you. I’ve been there. I got you.”
That’s what community does. And that’s why I started GearUpYourLife — not just to share gear and guides, but because I believe every traveler is on a deeper journey. To find out who they are. To build confidence. To feel at home, even when they’re traveling once a year .
So if that’s you right now — feeling unsure, stuck, or just tired — I want to say this:
You don’t need to become someone else.
You just need to keep going.
And if you haven’t found your voice yet…
That’s okay. We’ll help you find it. And we’ll be listening when you do.
Thanks for being part of this.
Thanks for letting me share this part of my own journey with you.
