Why Cheap Isn’t Always Bad

Packing smart on a small budget? Start here

Hey, Johannes from GearUpYourLife here.

When I started traveling, I had no budget.
Like—no budget.
I’m talking less than $200 to cover all my gear: backpack, headphones, water bottle, packing cubes... the works.

Naturally, I bought the cheapest stuff I could find.
Some of it fell apart within days.
But a few items? Actually held up — even in Vietnam at 38°C.
(That’s 100°F for most of you reading this 🇺🇸😉)

So today, I’m bringing you 10 extremely budget-friendly items and brands I’d start with — of course tested, travel-proof, and all pulled from the full Budget Guide, where I break down a complete setup under $250.

Backpack = Chaos? These little guys keep things (kind of) organized.
Amazon Basics isn’t fancy, but they just work – and cost next to nothing.
Seriously, they saved me from digging for clean underwear in a hostel bunk. 🧳

Let’s be honest – your phone dies, you panic.
This one's small, reliable, and won’t eat up your budget like the fancy brands.
Still use mine all the time on long train rides or at airports. 🔋

One of the cheapest “gadgets” I’ve ever packed – and still one of the most useful.
Hang your towel, bag, or wet laundry anywhere: bunk bed, shower rail, tree branch...
They cost like $3 and weigh nothing – but somehow feel like travel magic. 🪝✨

Perfect for hotel leftovers, fruit from the market, or midnight snacks.
They’re washable, leakproof and eco-friendly without being annoying.
Mine has survived mangoes in Thailand and greasy fries in Portugal. 🥭🍟

Super comfy, dry fast, and don’t look like typical “travel gear.”
I wore them hiking, city exploring, even on sketchy bus rides.
Still holding up after months – and no, I didn’t pay $80 for them. 🩳✅

Noise cancelling? Nope. Bluetooth? Also nope.
But for $12, these wired Panasonic headphones actually sound really decent.
They won’t win any design awards, but they’ve saved my sanity on night buses and airport floors more than once. 🎧
(Still wild how far $12 can go.)

Tea? Noodles? Oats? Yes, yes and yes.
This thing folds down tiny and works in any sketchy Airbnb or no-kitchen hostel.
Also: saved me from way too many overpriced cappuccinos. ☕️💡

8. Tech Organizer (Bagsmart)

Loose cables = stress.
This pouch keeps chargers, adapters and all that tiny stuff together.
Nothing sexy – but sooo satisfying when you actually find your SIM pin on the first try. 🧩📱

I don’t travel paranoid – but I do like sleeping without weird lock anxiety.
This little gadget fits on most doors and takes 10 seconds to use.
Honestly? Peace of mind is kinda priceless. 🛏️🔒

Looks simple, weighs nothing, holds just enough – the perfect “grab & go” bag.
Okay sure, it ain’t NayoSmart quality... but for the price? Unbelievably good.
Honestly, it’s still in my top 5 bags of all time. 🎒🔥

What you’ve just seen is just a tiny part of the full Budget Guide.

You don’t need a big budget to travel well – just smart choices, a bit of curiosity, and the right gear in your bag. ✈️🎒
See you on Sunday,
Johannes
Safe travels ✈️
